FARMER FEATURE: KERRY HARRINGTON
Of how she came to farming, Kerry Harrington says, “I didn’t always know I wanted to be a farmer, but I always wanted to make people healthier.”
Kerry and her husband Josh Jimenez run The Other Side Farm in Marshall, Arkansas. They raise broilers and laying hens and care for two milk cows. “One day I’d like to have a hog farrowing operation,” says Harrington. “I’d also like to add a few beef steers to round out the pasture management.”
Kerry developed a passion for farming while working for Falling Sky Farm, also a member of Grass Roots. “I really enjoyed my time on the land and admired their way of life.”
Though she’s not an Arkansas native, Kerry has lived in the state since she moved here to attend the University of Central Arkansas, where she earned a B.S. in Biology. “Biology is the study of life, which is also a theme in farming. Not one of my classes trained me to work on plumbing or diesel engines, however,” she laughs.
Not only does Kerry farm for the co-op, she also works as the organization’s inventory and order fulfillment manager and serves as board secretary. And she takes care of her two-year-old daughter. She admits that these days, Josh ends up doing the majority of the morning chores.
When asked why The Other Side joined the co-op she said, “I knew it was the only way I was going to be able to start farming on my own. It just seemed like an obvious choice.”
